Pic 1 (to the right): My favorite piece of my collection. My friend Kerri made this for me for my birthday.

My collection started on March 2008 and its grown to a decent size. Now I have ran out of funds for my collection and now it pretty much came to an halt. Also I do have some more items that I did not have a chance to take pictures of; for example Bleed Like Me single, some posters, ads, and others I can’t remember right now.

Also, as you were going through the pictures you might of ask yourself, “Why didn’t he group some items together?” Well, the answer to that is I took these photos at different times in the year when I recieved them.

Here is some of my collection:
Unfortunately, lack of internet last year meant that my collecting was pretty much put on hold. I am really looking forward to getting back into it now.

Of all the items in there, my favourite would have to be the Marc Jacobs boots. I don’t know why, given that they’re not really a piece of memorabilia. But to me, these boots epitomise the BLM era. Plus, they’re one of the few items I have that are not CD’s or records - when people see my G cupboard the boots are always the first thing they comment on. Unfortunately, they’re a size 5, so they’re too small for me to actually wear but if I could, I don’t think I would because I’d be so afraid of ruining them.

There are a few other items that are not in the G cupboard - I have a whole box of CD singles somewhere (really must dig that out!) and a tour jacket from v2.0 in the wardrobe. Also I have a couple of framed tour posters in the hallway - one from the debut era and one from BLM (both Aus tours). I’d love to get a poster of the Melbourne BLM show (the one I have is Sydney) because it was on my birthday - one of the best birthdays ever. Thanks to my friend for going with me and putting up with my mini-meltdown when Shirley came on stage!!!

Unfortunately, lack of internet last year meant that my collecting was pretty much put on hold. I am really looking forward to getting back into it now. I don’t want ‘everything’; I’m really fussy about what I do and do not buy. I really love all the little memorabilia trinkets so I’ll probably be looking at getting some more of those where I can. My dream item is the BUTG keyrings - they’re so beautiful, but sadly, so rare.

I’ve just ordered the 1996 video and the recent Absolute Garbage DVD off Amazon.com - really looking forward to getting these. Then I’ll start catching up on all the AG era stuff I missed!

I started collecting “Garbage” in 2007. But I bought my first single “Stupid Girl” in 2006. That makes Driving Lesson my first b-side! My main collection consist of singles but its growing to vinyl and memorabilia.

The biggest problem I’ve encountered is, I don’t have pay pal so I only buy within the United States. Not everything I want to buy is located here but I make do. I think I’ve done quite well for myself! My collection has set me back almost 300 USD. The most expensive item I have purchased alone is the SYM collection for 20 USD. The cheapest probably the Breaking Up The Girl European card sleeve about 3 USD. Unites states promos don’t really interest me at all. I think there drab and no fun! So I don’t own any. On to my collection its not big nor interesting but it keeps me busy! I like to say “I’m a hard-core collector in the making”.

Self tittled

This era took place right when I started school. Back in 1996, I was 5 so as you can imagine I wouldn’t remember them. As you can see very basic stuff. The G shirt is home made, it reads Garbage on the back. Milk number #11601.

Version 2.0

For this era I would just be turning 7. I was into the whole 90’s pop thing so no Garbage. I have every UK single for this album. My Trick is to keep breathing is from Germany and is still sealed! Trash26 is the first and only trash I own haha. This is a era where I want to collect memorabilia from.

beautifulgarbage

Ahhh beautifulgarbage. My favorite album by far. Come on how could ya not love it? As you see I have the special edition rose fold out CD and the SYM full set singles. Believe it or not these were really easy to get. I want to have every official release from this era.

Bleed Like Me

This era holds a special place in my heart. This is the first time I had ever point blank heard of “Garbage?” The coolest item I think from this era is the WDYLM 7″ with the real pink tape! I have all the vinyl from this era. Which I think is quite cool =) I have a US press photo showing off Shirley’s sexy legs and 4 BLM promo cards. I had 5 but gave one to a friend.

Absolute Garbage and Other

In this bin I have the special edition AG along with the fabulous DVD. Garbage star profile and a set of 9 unofficial 1″buttons. Not listed are my cut outs of every era.

Wish list
Things I’m always trying to get my grubby hands on are: Debut UK 7″collectors box, BUTG 1,2,3, Cherry Lips 2, Androgyny 1, Debut 12″vinyl, rest of debut 7″vinyl.

Word.

I think the combination of the font used and the single names meant that there was alot of room for funky ideas of packaging of memorabilia and promo items. I think also the seemingly more limited/hard to find nature of some of the items (compared to the V2.0 era) makes them that much more appealing, but at the same time that much more expensive….
In this post are my memorabilia items from Version 2.0 - which I think had some of the better items for promotion as this is when the Garbage Official Store was selling merchandise. There were some really cool items in this era, including great sticker sheets of the V2.0 symbols (all except You Look So Fine - as far as I am aware), mailers, really well packaged press kits and tons of other stuff. I forgot to put my posters , t-shirts and official calendar in this post, but everything else currently resides in my collection :)
Well, further to my last post which was an overview of my collection, I figured I would do a new post with some specific focus on my new area of “obsession” - collecting the memorabilia from the various Garbage album eras.

There is just something really cool about the memorabilia that Garbage produced - the quirky packaging, funny concepts for items (”paranoid” condom anyone?) and generally just really aesthetically pleasing stuff! I think I would have to say that I have probably spent as much on memorabilia stuff as I would have on actual music formats like CDs, cassettes and vinyl…somewhere in that region at least.

So, I will now post some photos of the memorabilia items in my collection from the 4 major Garbage album eras (not including Absolute Garbage - where there was arse all promotion except for a couple of posters)….and from each of these eras I will try my hardest to pick out my favourite few pieces of memorabilia in my collection from each era :) There is still heaps out there I want too, so will also list the things I am still most interested in obtaining! (Some things are yet t arrive and are not included such as a signed BG lithograph and Bleed Like Me wristbands…I also forgot a couple of things - carrier bags, debut beer mats and my V2.0 calender, V2.0 shirts and promo Australia/NZ V2.0 poster)…

This is my Garbage collection. Ive been collecting properly since 2004/5 when I discovered ebay. Originally my intention was to merely collect all the singles for b-sides and rarities which by the time I got to university in 2004 was more or less fulfilled (missing one or two by then). I did have the UK VHS as well as the SE of bg which I thought had the most amazing packaging at the time - it was a sign I was starting to become a fully fledged fan buy buying an album I already owned for nothing more than glorified packaging.

To date I have over 400 items in my collection from physical releases to various bits of memorabilia. Although not as big as some I’m very proud of what I have been able to obtain in such a short space of time.

Recent additions include the now much sought after TRASH01 from the “TRASH ITEM” set and the Version 2.0 nailpolish.

People often ask me why Garbage and why collect- to which I find that I do not have a straightforward answer. Fundamentally its the music that I’m drawn to has driven me to collect as much as I can. Largely its to do with the high aesthetic quality of many of the amazing things that have been released by the band. However if I’m honest, largely its a pure addiction lol.

Anyway here are some recent ish photos of my entire collectio0n with more to come. i say recent ish purely because the photos are a month or so out of date and I have recently acquired more things (as you do):

This is the vast majority of physical releases from the Debut era that I currently own (recent additions will be added momentarily). Aswell as the Debut album in CD and Cassette form I own releases(commercial and promotional) from all the 6 singles released between 1995 - 1996 Vow, Subhuman, Queer, Only Happy When It Rains, Stupid Girl and Milk.

Some of my favourite items here include the 14 track Japanese first pressing (BVCP-881), the Limited edition Korean CD with bonus disc, packed in a stickered card slip case (BMGSD7723 74321 48074 2) which I purchased for 4 pounds having seen it go for as much as 100 pounds! Although I only have a few of them the casettes I own I love as you can’t buy them anymore. Special mention has to go to the Canadian Promotional tape. (MCAC 9598) which has snippets from the Debut and the cover reads: “when someone tells you that today’s music is Garbage believe them!”. Again the same goes for Mini Disc (MD31450), another dead format - feel that is also extra special.

Other favourites include miscellaneous items such as the US promo of Supervixen (PRO-CD-8010) . Not only is it quite possibly my favourite Garbage song but it was never released as a single anywhere in the world so to have it on seperate release I think is quite nice. I love the original artwork for the # 1 Crush - Nellee Hooper remix commercial promo CD (74321 47771 2). The French Rare Tracks Collection (74321 33398 2) CD was another one that I seemed to loose out on on many occaisions - was overjoyed to finally have it in my collection. My NZ promo video also another favourite one that appears to be quite rare.

I was stocked to get the Spanish promo cd of Queer in the black sleeve (74321 35682 2) as it appears to be quite difficult to get hold of (again backed with Supervixen).

Getting the US single of Only Happy… (AMSDS-89002) was a real turning point for me collecting wise. The alternate artwork spurred me on to getting commercial releases from all over the world. as did the US version of Vow backed with the Torn Apart Mix (AMSDS-88000)

I remember the milk cd promo with the hologram sleeve (MILKCD PP) being hard to get hold of until I saw it on a record site. I have only just managed to get hold of the other identical Milk cd promo (MILKCD P) with 3 tracks as opposed to 5 (not seen in pic). The Germany promo (74321 42323 2
PROMO) aswell was quite tough to get at one point too! Not only do I have that but I recently obtained the rarer version in the slimline case. Despite the high asking price I was also very please to obtain the Australian promo version aswell (D12165).

Trying not to waffle on lol. Favourites from Version 2.0 include the Hong Kong Edition with bonus VCD (74321 55410 2), again another defunct format. and for the same reason the mini - disc. The promotional tape for Version 2.0 is also a recent favourite from this era.

Also the 5 3″ CD singles in blister packs - such a unique/unusual ( and expensive too I believe) way to package a CD that you dont see every day.

Other favourites include: Push It USA promo which comesblack CD Q pack CD case with gold artwork instead of the standard red for this release. (AMS5P-8037). I remember I picked up a copy of the Canadian release (AMDS-9872) backed with Thirteen (as I did not want to open my sealed 3″ single to hear it) at a record fair in my university town of Canterbury for a pound.

I was really happy to get hold of the European CD single of Paranoid (74321 57438 2) that comes in a card sleeve released on SACEM label as apparently its quite rare being on that label.

The Custom sleeve designed US promotional releases for Special (AMS5P-8063) and When I Grow Up (AMS5P-8083) respectively were an absolute pain to get hold of. It came as a relief to get the later especially as I got it cheap compared to the former which cost over 20 pounds! The Spanish cd of …Grow Up in the pvc envelope (74321 66465 2) with a track recorded at the Roskilde festival in Denmark on June 26, 1998 came as welcome suprise discovering it randomly on ebay one day not realising it existed.

For the same reason as with Supervixen in the Deut Era I love the SPAIN: “Temptation Waits” CD, radio promo (74321 69206 2) only in PVC wallet as again this was not a single but a one off CD. Also The Trick Is To Keep Breathing even though that was limited single release across Europe (74321 64576 2) which was not easy to get hyold of.

Lastly, the ‘Eric Kupper mixes’ of You Look So Fine” on CD-R was another unintentional find that apparently is not easy these days to come by was a nice addition. As was US cd Independent Access (AMS5P-8045) and the Austrainian CD ROM (G1) (not pictured) which both took alot of perseverence to finally obtain.

From beautifulgarbage: Without a doubt one of my my favourite releases from this era is the Early promotional CD supposedly from Portugal (720.0095.020) as few known copies are said to exist. Whilst it is believed to be official I don’t think its ever been confirmed via official channels. I also happen to love the alternate sleeve artwork in contrast to other bg releases.

That being my favourite Im pleased to also now own the Polish promotional version of the album (not pictured) (74321 90057 2) aswell as the Australian Tour Edition ( MUSH95CD) which was released to coincide with Garbage’s October 2002 tour for M-One, coming in a special slipcase with embossed foiling which is individually numbered and lists the four tour dates. Extra pleased given that I won it for a penny!!!!!!! The Japanese’s version I have comes with a pretty sticker and japanese lyric booklet.

Also love the mega rare, promotional tape for the release SCIP66 - Garbage:Special Collection which comes in an orange case. It is unknown how many of these promotional tapes are in existence. Stunning to look at aswell as rare absolutely love it!!!

Despite not having a full set (missing Shut your Mouth) I love the promotional VHS’ from this era with their respective single cover art.

I prefer the European/Australian cover artwork for the release of Shut Your Mouth as (MUSH106CDM) as it was in keeping with the aesthetic of the other designs for this release as opposed to the UK version (MUSH106CDS). I remember insisting to my parents about buying the European single in FNAC in Barcelona as it was rumoured that the UK would not be getting its own release of the song at the time. Probably a good idea really in hindsight as it like its UK counterpart have become veery sought after!

From Bleed Like Me: the Bleed Like Me US 2 track promo (GEFR-11430-2) was a right royal pain to find - found it under a tenner eventually so was very very pleased! The in store DVD Media promo was a welcomed addition even though its the shortened version of another release which I still have not been able to get. I love the “un garbagy” artwork for US promo release: Re-Cycled (GEFR-11333-2).

The Why Do You Love Me protional formats are a favourite from this era. The CD-R promo ( not pictured), The France CD-R promo and finally the US promo (not pictureed) simply for coming in a crystal jewel case compared to the others in card sleeves (GEFR-11346-2) which matches BLM and Sex Is Not The Enemy. Again like with bg, I love the WDYLM promo VHS in the custom sleeve- again was not easy to come by.

Not for aesthetic purposes as it looks dull but the German album CD-R in a PVC wallet, the sleeves and disc have a unique water mark so that Warner Brothers are able to track the release back to it’s registered owner. Makes you feel like its some highly secretive, black-market-under-the-counter type thing!!!!

Lastly, the promo for Run Baby Run (PR015434) back in 2005/06 was quite hard to get hold of (being a limited release) at least reasonably priced so was nice to get that in the end too (even though it was at that same time)

Vinyls: Something I have never been that eager to collect which is why it makes up such a small part of my collection. Aside from the stunning 7″ from the Debut I was never that interested in getting the commercial releases on vinyl. But my opinion has been changed and its a part of my collection I now want to expand on. Favourite items are said vinyls from the debut like Vow in the metal sleeve (CORD001) - the sleek design blew me away. that coupled with the fact it was a very limited release. Also the Boxset containing six double sided 7″ singles, labeled A to F which i have two sealed copies was a really exciting thing for me to get just recently as i have wanted such a cool item for a very very long time!

Also pleased that I got some months ago, a second copy of Subhuman (SX1138)a very limited relsese like Vow, in a rubber embossed G envelope sleeve with the incorrect insert. They list the item as S1138 and were intended for the promotional version.

Again like with the Debut, the BLM era saw a welcome return to the stylised packaging of old with WDYLM (WEA385) and SINTE taped up sleeves to match the album’s artwork.

One thing never appealed were jukebox vinyls but something I got into. Now have all the Version 2.0 ones bar YLSF which is proving nigh on impossible to locate, The World Is Not Enough and Milk (SX1494A/B) and Queer/Stupid Girl (SX1237/SX1271).

Although not pictured I now have all 3 of the stunning DJ Milk promos - none of which were hard to find but I’ve bought so many things lately it got pushed to the back burner

Absolute Garbage: I remember trying to get my hands on any of the promotional releases when they first came out. In most cases I was initially unluckly and bidding on some things went through the roof. You can pick up most of them now for very little but some seem to have dissapeared almost as fast as they first showed up.

Out of this lot favourites include: 18 track promotional CD in card sleeve - the creamy looking one with embossed lettering and booklet like the one that would appear in the commercial version - remember seeing it and being insanely jealous as it looked so gorgeous.

Was incredibly happy to get hold of the Sampler cd (SAM01265) as bidding initially went through the roof on this one. But a real noteworthy favourite has got to be the Australian Promotional CD-R in jewel case with custom paper insert for Tell Me Where It Hurts (WCDB1092) particularly for that unique picture sleeve. Also the non pictured promotional CD-R in white paper sleeve and outer plastic envelope.

Even though you can see them everywhere now on ebay, the promo poster I had not seen at all when I saw it auctioned off. Its especially noteworthy as it was the only part of the limited ad campaign that included “Push It” in the hit-single blurb.

Ah the Trash Items(of which I only have 1 more to get)! Recent addtion being TRASH01 (not pictured) which I was so utterly in shock about finally winning after all these years I dont thinik after a week it has sunk in.

Its been a long journey trying to get all of these. From TRASH36 (bg tape), TRASH31 (one of my first ever ebay purchases!) and TRASH19 - I think were the first trash items I owned to getting all the other Version 2.0 shapped sleeved items (17,18,22,23, 25, 26, 28, 29 and 30) in quick sucession aswell as TRASh 16 “Taken From the Debut“, to picking up TRASH08 in Canterbury High Street.

I bought TRASH47 pretty early on for like 2 pounds to more recently spending 99 pounds on TRASH20, that T-Shirt lol. Thinking I’d never get either TRASH02,46, 39 (which I think has only appeared once since I bought it last year), 27 or 32 to finally owning them has been really quite cool. Who knows how long it may be before I may ever get that ruddy TRASH11!!!!!

As I bought this after the photos were taken I thought I would include them here.

I’ve been buying items on eBay since 1999, for a number of reasons the main one being that it is the biggest and best source for collectors around the world. Since 99 my collection has grown so much thanks to this one site. It has a number of great features to it which can help a collector obtain items from all around the world without the need to contact hundreds of suppliers when a new single or album is released something I used to do all the time prior to having the internet when I started collecting back in 1996. There isn’t much wrong with the site in my opinion apart from one thing and that is the buyers! This post is simply to try to educate buyers in how to use eBay in a way that will save you money and win you more items.

Do not bid as soon as you see the item!

This is the biggest crime by newbies, but still happens by long established users who should know better!

If you want an item then the golden rule is DO NOT BID! Yes that is correct do not bid on an item if you want it.

Bidding as soon as you see the item does 2 things, the first is that it draws attention to the item, the second is that you can get into a bidding war!

The image above is the perfect example of this. Within 2 or 3 days of this item appearing on the site it had gone from £1 to £60 (The item did have a buy it now at £99.99, eventually it sold for £236.31). This item is a better example of what normally appears on the site (A UK sales award, made out to Shirley Manson herself) however a bidding war has started days before the auction ends!

What is a bidding war?

A bidding war is what the seller of the item wants to happen. It is where two or more people keep upping their bids to ensure they are the highest bidder days ahead of when the auction is set to end. This therefore increases the price that the auction will end at. If this is the sort of thing you do then I ask you this. Why would you want to pay more for an item? Some buyers seem totally clueless, I really don’t care if you are one of these people but if you do this then you are an idiot! By continuing to bid days ahead you have not only drawn even more interest to the item, but you have also increased the price for yourself.

What do you mean?

It works like this, you bid, someone else then sees the auction and also bids so that they out bid you and then 2 hours later you check your email and say “What! they have out bid me, I need to bid again or I’ll lose it!” you then bid again, they then do exactly what you just did and the circle keeps going round and round. And all the time the only person who is happy is the seller, while the idiots who are bidding are making them self pay way more than the item should have gone for. You are basically throwing money down the drain. Stop it and Stop it now!

So how do you get out of this? It’s simple.

If the item is a great item (as in this example), then someone somewhere will always make a bid on the item, this will stop the seller from removing it from the site (under eBay rules, although some sellers still will.). In this case the above auction started with a “Buy It Now” but someone didn’t want it for one hundred quid. As that option wasn’t taken the price started to rise from the auction price of £1

What should have happened in an ideal world was that no one else would have bidded. However they did. What should happen is that if you really want to win an item then you wait until the final few seconds of the auction and you snipe it.

What do I mean by snipe?

A sniper is a crafty little f***er like me who will bid as late as possible in every auction they ever want to win, 9 times out of 10 I always win, this isn’t me being big headed it is a simple fact that this works. The only time I don’t win is when my price is lower than the highest bid from another sniper or that which has already bidded. The other time I could lose is due to not reaching the reserve price if there is one set. In all cases I never get wound up by this because I clearly don’t value the item as much as the person that won it, shit happens there will always be another time when I can win it again or buy it from someone else.

Sniping really is the best way to win anything on eBay. I have been known to win an item with my bid being logged at 1 second before the end of the auction, however I don’t like bidding quite as late as that, normally I bid about between 3 and 5 seconds from the end in case there is a lag on the server.

So I’m bidding late what if someone else also bids late?

Well if your bid is higher than theirs then they won’t have time to put another bid in bumping up your bid, therefore you should get it cheaper, than you may have, had you been in that bidding war. Remember bidding wars do two things, the first is that you bump the price up, the second is that you change your ideal max price (more on this in a bit).

Hold on a second I live on the other side of the world!

Of course you may be in a different time zone to where the auction is based and may not be able to bid at 3am in the morning, there is help at hand. There is software out there that will bid for you late on in an auction but there is nothing like feeling your pounding heart as you are watching the seconds of an auction tick down!

Using software has it’s advantages but you are then dependant on both the software and the servers not messing up. I’ll always snipe an auction myself unless it ends at some god awful time I can’t make, like travelling to work for example or 2am when I’m catching some sleep or still out enjoying myself somewhere.

Have a price and stick to it!

If you have a price in mind then there is always a temptation to increase it if you have been out bid, don’t! If you were happy to spend £15 on an item what suddenly makes you want to bid £25 just to win it? think about it, another copy will appear at some point. Don’t waste a stack of cash by upping your bid! It’s just not worth it. I have seen many items go for stupid amounts of money and then go for just a few pounds the next time.

Going back to my example in the first point, it makes me wonder just how many of the bidders in the bidding way “changed” their max price days ahead of the auction ending

Know what you are buying & agreeing to

Make sure you know exactly what you are buying! Watch out for fakes and dodgy postage costs. Read the entire auction listing, don’t just look at the photo and price!

If you are ever unsure on any Garbage item that is for sale on eBay (or anywhere else for that matter) contact either myself or post a message in the Garbage Disco box forums someone there of myself will be more than happy to confirm if an item is real or not. If you are worried about someone else buying the item then just post a question about the item to the best you can. Someone will know what the heck you are on about. Plus remember to use the discography as there aren’t that many items that have been issued in the past 12 years that don’t appear on this site!

Get a PayPal account and get it verified

PayPal is by far the biggest payment system used on eBay. I suggest you get yourself verified and that it is also set up for PayPal eChecks! Some people will only accept these, it’s not very often but they take a week to set up. I have won amazing items where I did in fact lose the auction because the winner first of all didn’t read the payment terms and also wasn’t set up for eChecks and as a result couldn’t pay! I could so the seller sold the item to me without any problems whatsoever.

Don’t just stick to one site and search

A really common mistake is that some items aren’t shown on ebay.com (the sales award above was listed only on ebay.co.uk) some people only list on say the Irish version of the site (ebay.ie) yet they ship internationally, your eBay user account works on all the sites so use it.

An other common mistake is to only search within the Music category for Garbage items, look around the site and within the eBay stores!

Always think globally

Going back to the international sites, you should always search internationally rather than just using your local country site.

I hope this post helps you in saving money and obtaining more items on eBay. Oh and one last thing, consider using the Buy It Now function rather than bidding, you could save yourself a lot of bother and money!
