When and how did you get into Garbage?
Around 97-1998 or so, I had heard of Stupid Girl and Only Happy When It rains but didn’t really know who sang the songs. I wasn’t into music at all. After Version 2.0 came out I had gain some more knowledge of the band/artist. I was sold when I saw the “Special” video, but it was when I heard my favourite song of all time, from the first time I’ve heard it – it was my favourite and still is. “When I Grow Up” – the Big Daddy edition was played and that was it. I was hooked. I remember it was the first CD I had and could call my own. When I played it I usually only listened to When I Grow Up, Special, and a few others then it grew on me, and later on I started buying Garbage in higher frequencies. The Albums, Version 2.0 started it, then I bought Garbage, by the time Beautiful Garbage came out - I was very into them and am a devoted fan ever since.
When did you start collecting?
Collecting well I got Version 2.0 and Garbage then Beautiful Garbage. I didn’t really know that there existed such things as singles. I’ve only known about then since about 2001 when I met another garbage fan who told me he had a bunch of b-sides, released on singles. Early this Year Feb 12, I decided I would get those singles, so guess you could say I started earlier this year.
Do you or did you have any aims when you started out collecting?
I’m aiming for something reasonable. Obviously with the scarcity of some items, I found it best to base my collection on getting enough of the singles so I can have original (wav-CD quality) versions of the b-sides and remixes released throughout the years. I figure for the short-term I can be content to just having all of the songs released by then (albums and b-sides, and remixes) For example in buying the 3’ CD You Look So Fine it’s listed to have You look so fine, Get buzy with the fizzy, Solder through this, You look so fine - Fun lovin' criminals version, You look so fine - Eric Kupper deep drama mix (edit). These if I’m not mistaken are the same ones released on
Perhaps when I get done with that, as is human nature of wants and needs, I might want to expand to include one of each single regardless if it adds any songs or tracks I already have on another single or album.
How big is your collection?
All four Albums, Vow Single, All 3 Stupid Girl Singles, Milk CD1, 3’ inch blister pack mini-CD”s include ITIP, Special, WIGU, and You Look So Fine. Special Single CD 2, Androgyny Single CD2. Cherry Lips Single CD1, Breaking Up the Girl Single CD3. Latest one I’ve gotten is the new WDYLM single. Next one of the new ones I’ll look for I think will be the Run Baby Run maxi CD since it appears it will have the same b-side SINTE will have, Honey Bee, and in addition Never Be Free, Badass (October 2003 Ruff Demo). I also have Trash Talk Live CD 1995, and a few other CD’s.
What is your favourite Garbage item in your collection?
My Favourite item would either be my copy of Vow (no explanation needed) or Version 2.0 CD which I still have in its original casing (never broke the casing despite my abuse of my personnel belongings) which is what started it all for me.
How much do you think you have spent on your collection?
Running Count Estimated at $355 USD.(Includes money spent on Shirts, CD’s, Singles, Pins, etc.)
What’s the most you have spent on a Garbage item?
$30 USD for my copy of Vow (Almo Sounds; AMSDS-88000)
What’s the most you would ever spend on a Garbage item and what is it?
Not Sure of what would be the most I would spend, and not sure of what item I would be willing to spent that much money on at the present time.
Does your Garbage collecting Obsession stretch to seeing the band live in concert?
Eg: Do you follow the band from Show to Show for a period during a tour?
Unfortunately no, I was only able to finally see Garbage Live for the first time on April 19, 2005 of this year at the Hammerstein Ballroom the NYC show. I was grateful to get tickets to that show, after being a fan for some 7-8 or so years. But there is the possible upcoming second U.S. tour.
Will you ever sell your Garbage collection? If you were asked this same question in 5 years time what would your answer be?
I don’t see any reason right now for selling anything garbage or non-garbage that I’ve bought and is in my personnel collection of music and memorabilia, nor do I see any foreseeable reason I should sell it in the future.
